History Studied in This Unit:

The publishing of Sturm and Drang in Germany marks the beginning of the Romantic Movement. Two of the well known events in this period of history are the Civil War and the French Revolution. The rise of individualism and the interest in common man are greatly expressed in the literature of this era. Also important was the rise of nationalism.

Literature Studied in This Unit:

The Age of Romanticism includes many famous poets, examples being William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Burns, Lord Byron, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The novels Uncle Tom's Cabin, Frankenstein, and The Scarlet Letter are analyzed in detail during this study unit.
