Unit 7: Modern Times (The Age of Realism), 1865-1960

Modern Times - The Age of Realism is the last in a series of seven study units and focuses on historical and literary primary sources written from 1865-1960. This study unit is designed to cover one semester of study (18 weeks).

History Studied in This Unit:

Modern Times - The Age of Realism contains much discord. Military conflicts include World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Among many of the social conflicts are racial segregation, the depression, civil rights, and the Russian Revolution.

Literature Studied in This Unit:

The Age of Realism includes the naturalistic viewpoint. Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Jack London, George Orwell, Karl Marx, T.S. Eliot, and many others become influential writers during this period. Suggested readings include Animal Farm, Our Town, Heart of Darkness, The Red Badge of Courage, and To Kill a Mockingbird.
