About Us

A Word in Season was begun as a language arts tutorial service in 1991 in Houston, Texas, as a means to assist families with instruction in language arts. Born out of twenty years of classroom teaching, A Word in Season language arts curriculum  integrates the history of ideas, literature, and writing and is based on sound principles of scholarship found in the Bible and in the tradition of academic scholarship. The result is the teaching of clear thinking and fluent and purposeful writing and speaking.

Presented in seminars, formal classes, private tutoring, and writing workshops for various groups of home schooling parents and students in Texas and throughout the United States and overseas, the program is laying a literacy foundation for the next generation.

The creator of A Word in Season is Patricia Anne McFarlane, a writer, editor and English teacher with thirty years experience. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1964 and her Master of Arts in Literature from the University of Houston, Clear Lake in 1987.  Pat is married and the mother of two grown children. Since her retirement from the classroom, "Mrs. Mac" continues to be available to assist teachers with language arts instruction.

Doctrinal Statement of Faith

THE HOLY SCRIPTURES - The Old and New Testaments are the verbally inspired Word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed.

THE GODHEAD - One Triune God exists eternally in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God in His three persons is co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, and has the same attributes and perfections.

THE PERSON AND WORK OF CHRIST - The Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men. The Lord Jesus Christ accomplished mankind’s redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice; and man’s justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. The Lord Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God, and as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate.

THE PERSON AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - The Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment and is the Supernatural Agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. He is the Divine Teacher who guides believers into all truth, and He fills the unsaved with the Spirit.

THE TOTAL DEPRAVITY OF MAN - Man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam man inherited a sinful nature and became separated from God; man is totally depraved and is of himself utterly unable to be saved from his lost condition.

SALVATION - Salvation is the gift of God brought to man and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of man’s sins.

THE PERSONALITY OF SATAN - Satan is a person, the author of sin and the cause of the fall; he is the open and declared enemy of God and man; and he shall be eternally punished in the Lake of Fire.

DISPENSATIONS - The Bible may be rightly divided into seven dispensations of time in order to interpret it. Each dispensation is associated with a specific covenant from God.

THE RAPTURE AND SECOND COMING OF CHRIST - The personal, pre-tribulation and pre-millennial coming of the Lord Jesus Christ for His redeemed ones is imminent; upon His subsequent return to earth with His saints, He will establish His Millennial Kingdom.

THE ETERNAL STATE - All men will experience bodily resurrection, the saved to eternal life, the unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment.  At the moment of death, the souls of the redeemed are absent from the body and present with the Lord, where in conscious bliss they await the first resurrection, when spirit, soul, and body are reunited to be glorified forever with the Lord. The souls of the unbelievers remain after death, in conscious misery until the second resurrection, when with soul and body reunited they shall appear at the Great White Throne Judgment, and shall be cast into the Lake of Fire, not to be annihilated, but to suffer everlasting conscious punishment.
